nick: you can have my literary agent. i'll trade him for a box of froot loops. but you are right, one should count his blessings.

shawn (1): i'm not surrendering, just complaining. as samuel beckett said, "i can't go on. i'll go on." i'm making the changes suggested by editors -- the thing is, i don't necessarily disagree with them.

shawn (2): i haven't even considered publishing fiction vis the internet, though i know of such people and are happy with the results. your suggestions are most appreciated, though i don't know if you'd fork over 15 simoleans after reading the first chapter.

I, being a creative and problem solving soul, have been thinking about your publishing plight most of the day. I am reminding of a webcomic artist who tried for years to get syndicated in the national newspapers. Years of rejection led him to focus on a strictly internet presence. In doing so he became wildly popular, and now lives (comfortably) off of the earnings from his site and get paid to do what he loves. www.goats.com. There are solutions out there, perhaps its time to think "outside of the olde box". Maybe put a website in which you offer the first chapter of your novel for free and then charge a reasonable $15 for the rest of the book in PDF format. I'm sure most of the readers here would buy a copy. I know I would. Think about it.

In the matter of surrender, I must say never. How many times did Thomas Edison screw up the lightbulb? Over 100 times. So to hell with the 4-novel lady, bugger all to these nay-saying publishers. Keep going, its that simple.

Perhaps making modifications according to these dreadful publishers suggestions might be in order. There is the whole political side of matters to consider. Just a thought.

I'm not in the writing field, so I don't have the experiences that you have. I am, however, very familiar with the urge to toss it all and hide in cellars, etc. Many a time I thought about ditching Medical School and moving to Europe to pull pints the rest of my days. Thankfully my tenacity won out, and I made it.
